The revenue raised from the cable fee paid by the cable network operators to the BLM under the Bavarian media law is employed by the BLM for the support of local and regional television services and the Bavarian-wide television window service. In addition, a minor proportion of these funds is used to support cable radio services.
The cable fee revenue covers the costs for the technical distribution of these services; in addition, the private local stations receive some programme support. The monthly cable fee has been reduced continually since 2001; in 2007, it is scheduled to be 0.30 Euros per cable household. With all of these measures, it has been possible to establish a structure of local and regional television services in Bavaria which is second to none in Germany.
