In Germany, digital television started as early as 1996 when DF-1 went on air in Bavaria. National services transmitted via digital technology can currently be received in Bavaria via cable and satellite using a decoder.
Additionally, in the areas of Greater Munich and Nuremberg, digital terrestrial television was introduced with the first transmissions starting in May 2005. Since the end of 2005, all local television services have been available via digital satellite. Federal government has set 2010 as the deadline for complete switchover from analogue to digital transmission.
