The Media Council acts on behalf of the general public by ensuring a balance of interests, pluralism of opinions and services and by supervising programme services. It deliberates on issues of principal significance for the media. The Media council elects the President and the members of the Administrative Council. It decides on the transmission and retransmission of broadcasting services licenced under the Bavarian Media law, passes directives regarding programme organisation, approves the annual budget and accounts and decides on the promotion of programmes and technical infrastructure.
